History

It all began in 1962 with an Indonesian teacher, Mrs. Leiwakabessy, who began to teach Dutch children in the back room of her home in Menteng. “The little school that could” slowly expanded and in 1967 another dwelling was found in the annexes of Philips at Jalan Proklamasi.

The Netherlands School Association was officially established on June 14th 1969. The school continued to grow and, with the assistance of subsidies from the Dutch government, relocated to its own facilities in Slipi in 1972.
During the 1980’s the school prepared for its final move to Cilandak, a suburb in south Jakarta, where most of the Dutch expatriate community lived.

At the end of the school year 1990/1991 the NIS moved to the beautiful grounds at Jalan Jeruk Perut. Over the years the NIS further expanded with additional class rooms, computer labs as well as a fantastic Olympic-sized swimming pool, and toddler pool.
